Welcome to the pool Dan - come on in slowly and get used to the temperature before you throw yourself fully into biking - just the way you are describing it sounds like the right pace.
You picked an excellent machine ( of course my fav) which will serve you faithfully as a novice, intermediate or advanced rider.
Hope you checked out the comments about defensive driving and related stories - and I second that suggestion about getting some motorcycling lessons next spring -
